Billing FAQ

How are messages and connection minutes defined?

Messages are the number of messages sent to and from all connected WebSockets. Communication with backend services over HTTPS is not counted.

Connection minutes is the sum of how many minutes each socket is connected for (measured to the millisecond). The 20 million connection minutes provided by each Kanalo Unit is therefore equivalent to approximately 455 sockets connected 24/7 over the course of a month.

What is a Kanalo Unit? Why not just bill based on messages/connections?

A Kanalo Unit (KU) is an abstract measurement of a customer's usage that we use for billing. Each KU corresponds to 10 million messages or 20 million connection minutes.

Using KUs gives more flexibility for different real-time setups, or changes in usage patterns. A high message rate but low connection use case, such as a mobile game, and a high connection but low message count use case, such as IoT sensors, can be billed in the same way using a simple KU count. This saves us from having to develop different plans for every use case, or forcing some use cases to pay a much higher rate by using a plan that isn't well suited to them.

Can I get a detailed example of a KU calculation?

A delivery service uses Kanalo to track the locations of fleet vehicles. They have 400 trucks that drive for 10 hours each day, each with a tracker that sends metrics data to a server every two seconds via Kanalo. They also have a dashboard application to display this information, used by a few managers and also connected to the server via Kanalo to enable live updates.

The service operates six days a week, so a maximum of 27 days in a month. Therefore each truck will be connected for approximately 16200 minutes (27*10*60), and send about 486k messages (16200*30 since they send every two seconds).

As savvy architects, the developers realize that sending every truck update to every dashboard will result in an exponential explosion of messages. Instead, they have their server issue an update to the dashboard tag every five seconds instead, batching together all the truck data. This means that even with 10 viewers having the dashboard open for 10 hours a day, they will only use about 162k (10*27*10*60) connection minutes and receive 1.944M (10*27*10*60*12) messages over the month.

Connections: (400 trucks * 16.2k minutes + 162k dashboard minutes - 5M included in base price) / 20M minutes per KU = 0.0821 KU, which rounds up to one additional KU for connections.
Messages: (400 trucks * 486k messages + 1.944M dashboard messages - 5M included in base price) / 10M messages per KU = 19.1344 KU, which rounds up to 20 additional KU for messages.

The company would pay $240 per month; $30 for the Pro plan, plus $210 for 21 additional KUs (one for connections, 20 for messages)

Is there a free trial?

There is no free trial of our paid plans, but you can use the Kanalo Dev plan to develop your apps for free. The Dev plan has all the Kanalo messaging features such as Pipelines, Functions, and Commands, but has some hard limits on usage. Stay on the Dev plan for as long as you need to build, and once you're ready to go live or do more advanced deployment testing, you can upgrade to our Pro plan.

When will I be billed?

Plans are billed at the beginning of each month. Any overage charges incurred from the previous month will be added to the invoice for the following month.

What happens if I use more KUs than I've purchased?

If you use more capacity in a month than you've reserved, the additional KUs used are considered overage KUs. Overage KUs will be added the following month's invoice, and cost 1.5x a normal KU. We recommend ensuring you have some buffer room in your subscription to avoid incurring overages.

Are plans prorated?

Upgrades to paid plans are prorated based on the remaining time in the current month. Downgrades and cancellations are not prorated, but only come into effect the following month.
